Frying pans, Dutch ovens and griddles
Where can I find the user manual of my pan?

The users manual can be found on our website www.bk.nl on the product specific page, but also on the Service portal under ‘download manuals‘.

(only in Dutch language pages)

My lid, handle, handle or lid knob is broken. What can I do now?

BK provides a two-year guarantee with regard to defects in materials, construction and workmanship. Damage resulting from an accident, improper use or wear and tear through daily use are not guaranteed. My lid, handle, handle or knob is broken. What can I do now?. In this case you can so unfortunately not claim warranty. You can for many BK series a new lid or grip. Please have a look at our components. You'll find also components of some older BK series.Handles or lids are not available for all older series. Is your serie is not there? Unfortunately, there is no longer a separate component for that serie.

Has your lid or handle broken due to material, construction and finishing errors? Then contact the service department via  contact form.

There are stains on my pan. Why is this and how can I prevent this?

The 'spots' in your pan are caused by 'flash'-rust (surface rust). This form of rust is caused by small rusty parts in the surroundings of the product, contact with different steel products or by rust on other products. You can think of a rusty peeler which is washed at the same time in the dishwasher.
This surface rust can easily be removed with a soft cloth and a stainless steel cleaner. For example BK Stainless Steel Cleaner.
If maintenance of the pans has been neglected the damages will be permanent. Fly-rust is not covered by our garantuee.

Does it matter how high I turn up the heat?

Yes, it is advisable to always keep the flame under the bottom of the pan. Choose the gas ring that corresponds with the pan's base size. The tips of the gas flame are the hottest and if the ring is (too) large, the grips or handle will become hot. As soon as the food is boiling, you can lower the flame.

Where can I order a new handle or lid knob for a casserole?

These can be ordered on bk.nl under the heading  components . You can also find a number of older parts BK series. Unfortunately, there are not all older series still handles or lids. Is your series not listed? Then there is unfortunately no los part more for that series.

My stainless steel lid is discolored. Is this covered by warranty?

No, this is not covered by warranty. This is not a construction, material or manufacturing defect.

Discolouring is a result of overheating, for instance if the lid is placed on a hot heat source by accident or if a lid is used that is too big for the pan. Unfortunately, this discolouring is irreversible but the lid can still be used. You can optionally order a replacement lid.

How come my stainless steel pan shows discoloration?

Rainbow discolorations or white dots can occur in a stainless steel saucepan. It is a reaction of the pan with mainly starchy ingredients such as pasta, legumes and potatoes. These discolorations are harmless and fall under user traces.

The discolorations are very easy to remove with cleaning vinegar and a paper towel or sponge. You can also opt for a stainless steel cleaner, such as the BK stainless steel cleaner. Use a soft cloth or the soft side of a sponge for this.

How do I remove glue residue from stickers on my pan?

Glue residue can easily be removed in two ways:

  • First, try putting a little (olive) oil on some kitchen roll and gently rubbing it. This should gradually remove the glue residue.
  • If this doesn't work, you can try using sticker remover. Repeat the cleaning process until all the marks are gone. Make sure to then wash the pan well before use.

Many of our sales points choose to present our cooking utensils without packaging in the shop. To ensure that our brand name remains visible, we place a sticker with our logo on the exterior and an inlay with product information inside the pan. In most cases, these stickers should be easy enough to remove but if the pan was produced more than a year beforehand, this may be a little more difficult.

The stainless steel handle of my pan becomes hot. How is this possible?

The BK assortment includes pan series with stainless steel and synthetic grips. Despite the heat conducting properties of stainless steel grips or handles, these offer advantages compared with synthetic grips, for example:

  • The grips, handles and lid handles cannot discolour.
  • The grips, handles and lid handles can better withstand the aggressive effects of dishwasher detergents.
  • The grips, handles and lid handles cannot burn if a heat source is set too high.
  • The pans with stainless steel handles and grips can be used in the oven.

Just like the stainless steel or aluminium from the pan series, stainless steel grips or handles have heat conducting properties. This can cause handles or grips to become warm or hot. We therefore recommend that you use pan holders or oven gloves when using the pans. This information can be found in the user manual for your pan.

TIP! Do you cook on gas?

It is important, when using a gas hob, that the tips of the gas flame remain within the diameter of the base of the pan as these are the hottest parts of the flame. If the flame is too high, the grips will become hot.

How to season the BK Nature?

Place the frying pan on the heat source and slowly warm it up (make sure the extractor hood is switched on). Pour some light oil in the frying pan and rotate the pan to spread the oil over the whole surface. Heat the frying pan until the oil starts to smoke and keep the pan on the heat for one to two minutes, until it starts to change colour. Remove the frying pan from the heat, allow it to cool down and remove the oil with kitchen roll. Repeat this process two or three times. The frying surface of the frying pan will now have a darker colour. By using the frying pan, it will darken even further. This is a natural process and shows that the frying pan has been properly tempered. This patina layer protects the frying pan against rust and ensures that food does not stick. Tempering is a process that can be repeated after cleaning the frying pan.

The handle of my frying pan is loose. What can I do about it?

If there is clearance in the handle/grips, we recommend tightening the screw straight away. If you fail to do this, the amount of slack in the thread will get worse, due to the movement of the screw, and the screw may even come loose completely, along with the handle.

Clearance in the handle is unavoidable. The materials used in the mounting, the handle, the flame guard, the body of the pan and the screw are all different and have their own expansion coefficient. When heated and cooled, the expansion of materials plays a part and the screw can become unscrewed, resulting in slack.

Can I switch from hob (for example gas hob to induction hob) and still make use of my pans?

Changing heat sources is no problem provided the pans are suitable for the heat sources used. We recommend that you follow the tips below:

  • If you switch to an induction heat source, it is important that the base of the pan is magnetisable. You can easily test this yourself. If a magnet sticks to the bottom of the pan, this means it is suitable for induction.
  • When pans are used on gas for a long time, they may become concave or convex and, consequently, the induction plate may not switch on. Furthermore, the pan will not be stable on a glass cooking plate, making cooking difficult.
  • The base of a pan can become damaged when it is moved on a gas stove's pan supports and this can lead to scratches on a glass cooking plate. If you cannot feel any damage to the bottom of the pan, it is fine to use.

Please note: sliding a pan on a glass plate can always cause scratches, for instance if there is a grain of sand between the pan and the glass plate.

My enamel pan is damaged and the enamel is coming off. Is this harmful to my health?

The enamel on the pan is a glazed layer that is applied to steel plate at a temperature of more than 800°C and it contains no toxic substances. Accidentally consuming particles of the coating from the pan is not damaging to your health. If this accidentally ends up in the food, it will feel like eating sand and will be discharged from the body in the normal way.

BK has more than 120 years of experience in the manufacture of enamelled items. For decades, enamel was and still is used in the manufacture of saucepans, frying pans and many different household items, such as colanders, sand-soap-soda sets, kettles and buckets. We can safely say that, as far as we are aware, BK has never been confronted with a single complaint whereby a consumer's health has been damaged as a result of using one of BK's enamelled products.

There is a white haze on the bottom of my Fortalit pan

This white haze certainly doesn't hurt. The white haze can occur due to the use of the dishwasher. Therefore, when cleaning the Fortalit pan in the dishwasher, add some rinse aid. Or wash the pan by hand.

Where can I order a new handle for my frying pan?

You can order a new stem on the 'components' pagina on bk.nl.

The rim of my BK Balance+ frying pan is damaged. Can I claim my warranty?

No, damage caused to the rim is not covered by the guarantee but is considered normal wear and tear.

The ceramic layer of the pan is made up of silicone, among other substances, which can best be compared to glass. This ceramic coating can withstand high temperatures but, just like glass, it can become damaged when banged. Be careful when you stack the pans, tap kitchen utensils on the rim of the pan or when you use a lid. p>

Tip! Use for the safe storage of your balance + always pans the supplied protective case.

The interior (side, edge) of my pan has burnt-on grease stains, is tarnished, is no longer white/grey

During frying, oil or butter can spit onto the side of the pan. Since the side is not 'cooled down' by the food in the pan, the temperature of the side remains high and the fat may 'burn on'. The same occurs to the base of the pan if you use a pan that is too large for the product you wish to fry. The fat burns, becomes overheated, starts smoking and will burn onto the coating.

This can be prevented by reducing the heat on time. If the pan is not cleaned properly afterwards, the tarnish will decrease the non-stick properties of the pan next time it is used. We recommend that you make sure the pan is completely clean after use. If the ceramic non-stick coating is not kept clean, the tarnish will burn on even more next time the pan is used and in time it will no longer be possible to remove it.

Cleaning recommendations: We recommend that you clean the pan well after use with the hard side of a normal scouring sponge and a little detergent. Stubborn food residues can best be removed by soaking the pan overnight. Always grease the pan with a little (peanut) oil after cleaning.

Pressure cooker: water and/or steam is coming out of the side of the handle

  • There is a large lid ring on the inside of the lid. There is also a small ring around the valve. This ring is located in the specially designed groove in the valve.
  • When the lid is fitted onto the pressure cooker, the blue slider must be placed in the locked position in order for pressure to build up
  • The blue pressure regulator on the lid must be placed in position 1 or 2.
  • Check the valve for movement. See the manual for the correct instructions.

If everything appears to be in order, it is best to test the pressure cooker with water alone. Half a litre is sufficient. Close the lock on the handle, set the pressure regulator to position 1 or 2. Initially, steam will escape from the slits on the side of the handle. This is normal. As soon as the pressure in the pan is sufficient, the valve's silicon ring will seal the opening in the lid and steam will start coming out of the pressure regulator instead of the side of the handle. In the meantime, the red lever (indicator) pops up when the pressure cooker has reached the required pressure.

If you are still in doubt, please (re)read the user manual

Pressure cooker - The silicone ring smells strange

The lid rings are made of silicone and the advantage of this material is that it stays flexible, is heat-resistant and is safe for food. The disadvantage of silicone is that the material absorbs odours and pigments. Unfortunately, this is inherent to the material and cannot be removed easily. You can use a extra lid ring when cooking with spicy ingredients. It is also our experience that the rings absorb more odours if you leave the contents in the pan for a long time, for instance if you keep the pan in the fridge with the lid on.

You can optionally replace the lid ring with the BK Pressure Cooker Silicone Maintenance Set.

What is the best way to clean my baking pan or frying pan?

These pans may be placed in the dishwasher but, to keep them looking nice for longer, we recommend cleaning them by hand.

A few more tips:

  • Never clean a pan that is still hot with cold water, as this can create a thermal shock, which may cause the base of the pan to deform or become concave or convex, or it may damage the enamel coating..
  • Always allow the pan to cool first.
  • Always use blunt wooden or plastic spatulas.
  • We strongly advise against cutting in the pan!li>
  • If you stack pans on top of each other, always use protectors between them to prevent damaging..

Do you have a cast iron pan?

Coat the pan occasionally with some fat or oil such as lettuce or coconut oil. Rather not olive oil, this can burn in at high temperatures. Always use sufficient oil or butter when baking or roasting.

How do I know whether my pan is suitable for induction cooking?

If you switch to an induction heat source, it is important that the base of the pan is magnetisable. You can easily test this yourself. If a magnet sticks to the base of the pan, this means it is suitable for induction.

How can I prevent rattle of glass lids, since they do not have a steam hole?

None of the glass lids in the current assortment have a vent hole. Because a glass lid is heavier that a steel lid, there is less chance that the lid will 'rattle'. Because there is a higher chance of a sudden crack appearing in a glass lid that has a vent hole, we do not insert these in glass lids.

The problem is actually different. If the lid still rattles it could mean that:

  • There is too much water in the pan
  • The pan is too full and it would be better to use a bigger pan
  • The diameter of the cooking zone is too big
  • The heat source cannot be set low enough
  • Or a combination of the above

My glass lid is attacked. Is this covered by warranty?

No, this assessment is not covered by the guarantee. This is because it is the result of glass corrosion. This is caused by cleaning the lid in the dishwasher.

This wear of glass cannot be prevented with dishwasher use. It is caused by various factors such as the hardness of the water and the amount of dishwashing detergent. Wear and tear is not covered by our warranty conditions. You can order new lids. View the BK components for this.

There are rust stains on my pan/lid

Both the pan and the lid are made of steel plate covered with a layer of enamel, with the exception of the rim, which is why this has a stainless steel protective strip. If moisture reaches the steel plate, for instance due to slack on the stainless steel ring or the enamel being damaged, rusting can occur. Minor damage or just a smal amount of slack can have 'significant consequences'. The damaged steel plate may exhibit traces of rust all over and/or rust may form under the enamel without it being visible. The damage can be caused if the pan is dropped or banged and, unfortunately, this is not covered by the guarantee but is considered normal wear and tear.

If a defect arises when the enamel is applied during the manufacturing process, this will reveal itself shortly after the first use. This is considered a manufacturing defect and is covered by the guarantee.

Can I use my pan on a big zone on my induction hob?

The induction hob is divided into different cooking zones, each of which is suited to a particular diameter of pan. Information concerning this division and the minimum diameter your cooking zone needs in order to function can be found in the induction hob's instruction manual. This can differ between brands and types of induction hob.

An induction hob's coil needs a minimum surface area in order to switch on. That's why it is important that the base of the pan is the same size as the cooking zone. If the zone used is too big for the pan, the hob may not be able to locate the pan and won't switch on.

Please note
The diameter of the induction base needed can differ in relation to the type of pan, even though the size of the pan is the same (due to different manufacturing techniques). Because of this, the induction hob may switch on when using one pan and not when using another.

The coating (PTFE) on my pan is coming off/there are scratches on my PTFE layer

Accidentally consuming particles of coating from the pan is not damaging to your health.

The coating contains no toxic components that can be absorbed by the body. If the coating does comes off, it will be in the form of flakes. If this accidentally ends up in the food, it will be discharged from the body in the normal way. The damaged coating will reduce the non-stick effect of the pan and may cause your food to burn more easily, possibly resulting in carcinogenic PAKs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) being present on the food (like on the BBQ).

For this reason, we recommend that you always use wooden or synthetic spatulas in your non-stick pans to prevent damage. Scratches and damage to your non-stick coating are considered normal wear and tear and are therefore not covered by the guarantee.

My glass lid has cracked. What can I do?

Hopefully nobody was hurt and you were not too shocked. Although it is safety glass, the glass stays and can break. Unfortunately, there is not always an identifiable cause.

BK provides a two-year guarantee with regard to defects in materials, construction and workmanship. Damage resulting from an accident, improper use or wear and tear through daily use are not guaranteed. In this case you can unfortunately not claim warranty. You can order a new lid for many BK series. View our components.

My pan is suitable for induction cooking, why won't my induction plate switch on?

The induction hob is divided into different cooking zones, each of which is suited to a particular diameter of pan. Information concerning this division and the minimum diameter your cooking zone needs in order to function can be found in the induction hob's instruction manual. This can differ between brands and types of induction hob.

An induction hob's coil needs a minimum surface area in order to switch on. That's why it is important that the base of the pan is the same size as the cooking zone. If the zone used is too big for the pan, the hob may not be able to locate the pan and won't switch on.

Please note:

The diameter of the induction base needed can differ in relation to the type of pan, even though the size of the pan is the same (due to different manufacturing techniques). Because of this, the induction hob may switch on when using one pan and not when using another.

My pans make a noise on the induction plate/resonance

Every now and then a pan will make a noise when used in combination with an induction plate. This is known as resonance. There is nothing wrong with either the induction plate or the pan, however, this specific combination (the pan concerned and the plate) causes a noise. This resonance is usually unavoidable. In cases like this, often the only solution is a new pan.

The non-stick coating of my pan is worn out. Is this covered by warranty?

No, a worn non-stick coating is subject to wear due to daily use. BK provides a two-year guarantee with regard to defects in materials, construction and workmanship. Damage resulting from an accident, improper use or wear and tear through daily use are not guaranteed. In addition, the service life of any frying pan with a PTFE non-stick coating is two to five years.

Are there toxic substances in my BK pan with a non-stick coating?

No, the classic, modern or ceramic non-stick coatings do not contain toxic substances. Although there have been a lot of horror stories about PTFE non-stick coatings. PTFE is an abbreviation of polytetrafluoroethylene, which is a type of synthetic polymer. It is a smooth material made from tetrafluorethylene molecules that contain carbon and fluorine only. European public health organisations have approved the use of PTFE for non-stick coatings in cookware. PTFE is a substance that does not cause chemical reactions when it comes into contact with food, water or cleaning products. If particles are swallowed, they are completely harmless to the body and will leave the body via the natural way. The non-stick coating material is actually so safe in terms of health that it is often used in the medical sector, to cover pacemakers and replacement artery tubes.

Can I use the Conical + frying pan and skillet in the oven?

Yes, these BK fyringpan and skillet are ovenproof up to 260°C

Shake back and forth from a pan. Is this potentially harmful?

The handle of the pan can become loose if ingredients are flipped/tossed in the pan (e.g. so-called 'pancake tossing'). This causes the screw to come loose in the mounting, creating slack in the thread, which causes the handle to wobble and possibly even come loose.

If this looseness is a result of flipping/tossing ingredients, this is immediately obvious when the handle is removed because the flame guard 'eats away' at the pan. This complaint is not covered by the guarantee but is considered normal wear and tear. For this reason we do not recommend flipping/tossing ingredients.
